Practice Details

Conducts consultative psychological and psychosocial assessments in the Emergency Department in collaboration with the ED Physicians and on the inpatient units at the request of attending physicians or psychiatrists. Provides services to customers ranging in age from neonates to geriatrics. Available to assess the behavioral, psychological and “social service” needs of all customers. Render a diagnosis or diagnostic impression in cases related to psychiatric disorders and emotional/behavioral health. This position requires the ability to stabilize and analyze behavioral emergency situations for customers, families and facilities/institutions that are involved with the identified customer. Mental Health Professionals work along a brief therapy model and provide counseling/psychotherapy services to individuals, families, and groups. They provide cognitive/behavioral therapy to customers who need help with stress/anxiety management as well as with medical customers whose health struggles have a profound impact upon their emotional functioning. Mental Health Professionals are largely responsible for case management and discharge planning for the customers they have assessed. Consults and provides a teaching role to residents, medical and nursing staff regarding a variety of applications of behavioral medicine. Each member of the Emergency Behavioral Medicine team has extensive knowledge about community resources available and makes referrals to such programs on a regular basis. Team members are encouraged to develop expertise in a variety of areas and to participate in further professional development for themselves and their peers.

  • Document all customer and collateral interactions (phone or in person) when services are rendered.
  • Diagnose psychiatric disorders and emotional/behavioral health struggles.
  • Formulate intervention plans, make arrangements for admissions to NMHC or other state-wide facilities and facilitate appropriate/comprehensive discharge plans to the community.
  • Conduct behavioral emergency assessments and help manage customer, family and facility concerns.
  • May assist in evaluating suicide potential on hospitalized inpatients in conjunction with Administrative Managers, Charge Nurses and Primary Physicians.
  • Utilize cognitive-behavioral and brief therapy approaches to assist customers with stress/anxiety management or other struggles related to their medical disorders.
  • Provide counseling/psychotherapy services to individuals, families, and groups along with providing advocacy and community resource referrals.
  • Coordinate case management and discharge planning for customers they assess/evaluate.
  • Provide consultation/teaching to customers, families, and staff.
  • Actively involved in Child/Adult Protection reporting, documentation, and coordination.
  • Maintain daily documentation of types of services provided to facilitate professional group billing.
  • Accepts other duties as assigned to promote the accomplishment of organizational goals.
  • The team member is accountable to demonstrate proficiency for the skills outlined in the appropriate position skills list.
  • The team member is accountable to maintain skill proficiency, including improvement when deemed necessary, and upgrading any additional or new skills on the appropriate position skills list.

What background EBH clinicians bring:

Education

  • Completion of a Master's or Doctoral degree in Social Work or Psychology from an accredited college/university that results in eligible for licensure in the independent practice of clinical social work or psychology.   

Experience, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities 

  • 3 to 5 years of experience in community mental health with a behavioral medicine focus.
  • Documented experience in a site providing Crisis Intervention services.
  • Hospital experience preferred.
  • Ability to exercise mature, individual and ethical clinical judgments.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrates superior organizational, problem-solving, interpersonal, and written/verbal communication skills.      

Licensure/Certification(s) Mandatory

  • Current license as an Independent Clinical Social Worker who fulfills the requirements as set forth by the Minnesota Board of Social Work. 
    Or
  • Current Doctorate Level Licensed Psychologist from the Minnesota State Board of Psychology 
    Or
  • Current license as a Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) who fulfills the requirements as set forth by the Minnesota Board of Behavioral Health.
    Or
  • Current license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) who fulfills the requirement as set forth by the Minnesota Board of Behavioral Health.
