About this position
The North Memorial Health (NMH) Inpatient Coding and Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) Manager will oversee all inpatient hospital (HB) coding and inpatient CDI initiatives across the full spectrum of NMH care settings. The Manager is responsible for managing all aspects of the inpatient coding process to support accurate and efficient coding and developing and maintaining consistency across the inpatient clinical documentation program.
The Manager will manage staffing, distribution of work, dissemination of current coding guidelines and modern technology information, and inpatient coding quality assurance. The Manager will be responsible for leading the unit to ensure activities are completed timely and accurately within established guidelines and regulations. Additional responsibilities will include managing, tracking, and facilitating policies and procedures while maintaining customer satisfaction and adherence to healthcare system policies.
The Manager will supervise the Inpatient Coding and CDI Units and lead the overall strategic direction and performance of the following functions:
Provider Education Strategy: Develop and maintain standardized curriculum, provider metrics, and an escalation process for timely communication and feedback. Implement regularly scheduled educational programs that meet physician needs. Provide regulatory updates to physicians and serve as primary resource to physicians for inpatient documentation and coding issues.
Inpatient Clinical Documentation Improvement: Facilitate and obtain appropriate and high quality medical record documentation to support appropriate severity of illness, expected risk of mortality and complexity of customer care. Measure CDI team member performance and key physician opportunities and trends.
Epic Provider Workflow (Clinical Documentation & Coding): Partner with clinical and IT team members to enhance the Epic workflows to further support comprehensive and accurate provider documentation, charge capture and coding. Participate in planning, design, and communication forums to ensure timely response times between inpatient Coding and Providers.
The Manager will also be responsible for developing communications summarizing program successes, results and opportunities and sharing regular updates with clinical and finance team members. The Manager is expected to partner closely with Clinical, Operations, Revenue Cycle, and Health Information Management (HIM) leadership to assure the smooth operation of the inpatient coding and CDI functions while keeping with the NMH mission and values.
Requirements
Education
• Minimum Bachelor's Degree; Business or Health related degree preferred. • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Experience
• Minimum five (5) years of experience in a healthcare setting is required. • Minimum three (3) years Supervisory experience preferably within a Hospital, HIM Department, or Revenue Integrity Department. • Preferred, demonstrated experience managing a team. • Experience in customer service skillset with the ability to work effectively with management, team members and physicians. • Experience with process improvement and change management. • Experience in problem solving, critical thinking and analytical skills and demonstrated leadership, supervisor, training and coaching skills. • Ability to abstract from medical records, reports, chart entries, and related account documentation required. • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other team members, customers, organizations and external customer. • Ability to motivate and create a team environment, prioritize work distribution, exceptional organizational and time management skills. • Ability to navigate across multiple customer demands and balance competing priorities successfully. • Ability to focus on problem or task and articulate a resolution in a prompt, productive and efficient manner. Licensure/Certification
• Maintained ICD-10 trainer certification required and maintained (prefer upon hire, and if not, required to obtain upon a mutually agreed upon timeframe) - NMHA STandard
• Coding Certification or Nursing background required - NMHC Standard
