About this position
Coordinates patient flow throughout the Cancer Center, provides individualized direct patient care and assists physicians in treatment/management of medical oncology and hematology patients who may include adults or geriatrics. Provides education and support to patients and their families specific to the patient's disease.
Ideal candidate would be an Oncology RN for this role.
What we’ll expect from you
• Utilizes the nursing processes of assessment, problem identification, planning, intervention and evaluation in providing patient care in the clinic or in coordinating complex treatment admissions with regards to physical, emotional, psychological, spiritual and psychosocial needs. Practices competently to care for patients throughout therapy delivery by reviewing lab findings, assessing response to treatments, monitoring and management of side effects or treatment toxicities, recognizing oncologic emergencies, collecting the patient's history and reviewing of physiologic systems. • Supports patients and their family members by collaborating with other disciplines to facilitate the care of patients with complex needs including utilization of services such as social service, spiritual consultation, support groups, education offerings, nutritional counseling or care managers. • Manages projects and assists in program development and role evaluation as assigned. • Supports research opportunities for the patient by collaborating with the appropriate research staff in the implementation of research protocols and re-enforcing procedures related to the research protocol. Assures that research findings, which improve the quality of patient care, are incorporated into nursing practice. • Provides or coordinates education regarding the disease process and treatments selected for the specific disease process for new and established patients. • Assists in the accomplishment of population specific goals by improving clinical operations using managed care principles resulting in clinical efficiencies. • Supports other staff by assisting with procedures such as lab draws from central access devices (CAD) and injection of medication into Omaya reservoirs, according to established clinic and nursing protocols. • Communicates lab and test results or other information to patients or designated family members as directed by the physician. Provides for timely response to patient phone calls using physician standing orders or as directed after consultation with the physician. • Documents appropriately in the clinic medical record using Assessment, Intervention and Response format (AIR) notes completely and in a timely manner. • Attends billing/coding in-services and practices the charge ticket procedure designated for this job class. • Cooperates with other staff and PNCs and supports the flow of patients in the clinic by assisting other physicians as needed in the care and management of their patients. • Assists with patient care in the clinic as schedule allows or as necessary such as administering chemotherapy. • Maintains and enhances current knowledge and competency in the field of oncology and hematology nursing care including symptom management. Education
• Graduate from an accredited school of nursing required. • Master's degree in nursing preferred.
Experience, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
• Oncology experience required. • Experience in administration of chemotherapy preferred. • Experience as a Clinical Nurse Specialist with an oncology focus preferred. • Experience in planning and implementation of programs/reserach required. • Demonstrated effective organizational, interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
Licensure/Certification(s) Mandatory
• Current licensure as RN in State of Minnesota - State Requirement • Oncology certification is required within one year of hire. Selected candidate must maintain certification - NMHC Standard
