About this position

The Registered Staff Nurse (RN) provides holistic, care to customers and families. The focus is on independent, collaborative and delegated nursing functions as described in standards and competencies specific to the assigned service area. The scope of practice may include the care of neonates, infants, children, young adults, adults, and older adults throughout the life cycle. The RN executes the Standards of Nursing Practice including: assessment; nursing diagnosis; outcome identification; planning; implementation; and evaluation. The RN develops and revises the customer's plan of care, coordinates care among disciplines and delegates activities to other customer care providers as appropriate. The RN participates in shared accountability and decision-making for nursing practices. Through active participation in practice and by implementing personal leadership qualities and skill, the RN defines, implements, and improves practice standards and the environment of care and promotes remarkable customer care.

Variation of duties may result based on the assigned customer care unit(s). This may include differences in the specific clinical skills required of the RN. Unit based skill lists outline expectations beyond the house wide RN requirements.

Flight Nurse Accountabilities:
• Autonomously evaluate critically ill or injured patients of all age groups (infant through adult).
• Provide therapeutic and emergent interventions; efficiently prepare the patient for transport
(via helicopter or ambulance) from hospitals or accident scenes.
• Provide patient care within the clinical and operational guidelines/protocols established by North
Memorial Health Air Care.
• Fluidly evaluate changes in the status of patients and demonstrate a proactive approach to
solving patient and family problems.
• Maintain and process complete and accurate patient care records.
• Be an active participant in maintaining base quality assurance.
• Communicate effectively with outside institutions/agencies, including hospitals, EMS, police and
fire departments.
• Maintain contact with patients, families, referring facility staff and public safety personnel during
and after contact to provide continuous loop closure and information sharing.
• Maintain clinical competence across all aspects of care. This includes, but is not limited to,
cardiac assist devices, advanced ventilator management, obstetric emergencies, trauma care,
advanced airway management, management of multisystem organ failure, and potentially
extracorporeal (ECMO) support, IABP management, and Neonate transports.
• Perform physical requirements in confined spaces and under adverse environmental conditions.
• Participate in recurrent education sessions, Bi-Monthly meetings, SIM center skills lab/classes,
base competencies and maintenance of educational requirements for all licensures and
certifications.
• Complete transport missions initiated within the timeframe of his/her shift, understanding that
completion of these missions might require working beyond normal work hours.
• Maintaining the patients overall safety while in flight.
• Demonstrate knowledge of, and adhere to safety procedures set forth by North Memorial Health
Aviation and the FAA including annual aviation safety.
• Represent Air Care as a customer service representative for North Memorial Health.
• Maintain a professional demeanor at all times.
• Wear required uniform

Requirements

Education

• Graduate from an accredited school of nursing required
• Bachelor's degree in Nursing preferred
   

Experience

Experience
• Three (3) years of Critical Care experience as an RN required.
• One (1) year of experience in ICU and 1 year emergency room STAB room or equivalent
experience required.
• In lieu of ER experiences, two (2) years full time with Air Care as a paramedic or three (3) years
as a part time flight paramedic will be accepted.
• Prior flight experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
• Demonstrated leadership, verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
• Additional certification preferred, as appropriate, for chosen area(s) of nursing practice (i.e., CEN, CCRN)
• Knowledge of professional nursing principles and practice.
• Knowledge of nursing ethics.

  

Licensure/Certification

• Current licensure as RN in State of Minnesota

• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification, pre-employment requirement
