About this position

The Physician Assistant (PA) is a health care professional registered to practice medicine with physician supervision under statutes set forth by the MN Board of Medical Practice/Physician Assistant Practice Act. The Physician Assistant functions as a member of the health care management team to provide continuity of customer and/or inpatient care.

 

What we’ll expect from you

• Assembles a complete medical database including health history, history of chief complaint, and physical examination upon admission of selected customers and documenting the findings in the customer record.
• Assesses selected customers using physically and technologically derived data, including the evaluation of diagnostic test results, and documents this assessment in the customer record.
• Under the direction and in collaboration with physician designee, diagnoses medical conditions and plans medical therapeutics and interventions based on the medical database. Documents and communicates the diagnosis and plan to other members of the health care team.
• Under the direction of and in collaboration with the physician designee, orders medical and interdisciplinary consultations, therapies and interventions including but not limited to, medications, diagnostic tests and procedures, respiratory care, nutrition, fluid electrolyte support, and blood and blood products. Documents these orders and directives in the customer record and communicating them to other members of the health care team.
• Evaluates and analyzes customer responses to disease processes and therapeutic interventions, and determines the effectiveness of care and the need to alter the plan of care.
• Presents selected customer assessments, diagnoses, and plans of care during medical team conferences and/or rounds.
• Provides information and support to customers and families. Facilitates communication between customers and family members and members of the health care team.
• Collaborates with nurses and nurse managers to implement and evaluate holistic customer care delivery.
• Serves as a resource to members of the health care team to facilitate customer delivery by using an indepth pathophysiologic and psychosocial knowledge base.
• Participates in activities that contribute to the education of other healthcare professionals, including presenting and publishing.
• Provides the necessary information for billing for services provided, and being compliant with the documentation necessary for all services billed.
• Participates in or initiates activities that enhance professional development with the role as physician assistant.
• Acts as a role model, and in selected cases, precepts other physician assistants.
• Provides leadership and actively participates in the assessment, development, and implementation and evaluation of quality improvement programs.
• Performs other duties as determined collaboratively by the physician designee, PA and administrators that are within the scope of practice of the PA.
• Provides customer care by effectively using resources and participating in efforts to minimize costs and prevent unnecessary duplication.
• Accepts other duties as assigned to promote the accomplishment of organizational goals.
• The team member is accountable to demonstrate proficiency for the skills outlined in the appropriate position skills list.
• The team member is accountable to maintain skill proficiency, including improvement where deemed necessary, and upgrading any additional or new skills on the appropriate position skills list. • Recognizes and complies with legal, regulatory, accrediting and procedural requirements related to area of responsibility.

• Protects customer and team member privacy and only accesses customer and/or team member related information as needed to perform job duties.
• Reports violations or areas of concern to supervisor or Corporate Compliance Officer via established methods of communication.

Education

• Completion of a physician assistant program accredited by the Accreditation Review on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA). ARC-PA with neonatology specialty for NICU.   

Experience, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities 

• Three years' experience required; three to five years' preferred. • Understanding of hospital-wide and department-specific policies and protocols.      

Licensure/Certification(s) Mandatory

• Current Minnesota Registration/Licensure as a Physician Assistant
• Applicants issued a Temporary Registration by the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice may work as a physician assistant but may not prescribe medications. (A temporary registration is granted to physician assistants who have not yet obtained NCCOA certification.)
• Applicants issued a Temporary Permit by the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice may work as a physician assistant, including prescribing medications. (A temporary permit is granted to physician assistants who have obtained NCCPA certification.) The PA's sponsoring physician must submit a DEA co-sign letter to the North Memorial Health Care Credentialing Office if applicant does not have a DEA certificate
• Physician Assistant Certification through National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA). (Applicants may be allowed to complete the credentialing process pending certification if the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice has granted a Temporary Registration.)
• Current medical staff credentials in Specialty/Department
